Joseph Kossonogi (1981-1908) was born in Budapest, the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the 1920s, Kossonogi studied in Berlin and Paris. In 1926, he immigrated with his Zionist family to Israel and settled in Tel Aviv. At first he worked in construction and as an agricultural laborer. From 1930 to 1929 he was a partner in the modern group of artists Massad. Between 1955 and 1950 he lived in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem, and in 1956 he joined the Safed Artists' Colony and stayed there mainly during the summer months.
