The Canaanites

During the 1930's and 40's a group of Israeli artists tried to break the chains of European diaspora influences on the culture in Israel. it's objective and ideology was to establish Hebrew culture, one that is connected to the history of Israel, it's people and it's stories. though it would take much from biblical inspiration, Judaism wasn't the heart of the issue, but instead returning to the roots of the land.
The Canaanite art movement was led by Yizhak Danziger, and was mostly characterized by the use of animals, landscapes and myths.
here you will find works by artists of the movement during and after the periods of which the movement worked, as well as artists influenced by it and its ideologies.
